High up yet grounded. Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. In Soul Mountain, the lines of truth and fiction, even in a medium as fabulistic as the novel, as always blurred. I am sure many layers of the mountaim novel remained unseen by me, being a novice in Gao Xingjian's world and mindset, but enough of it resonated strongly and left me utterly grateful when I closed the heavy volume: The Story The main character of the story is a matured man called Li.
He had promised if he had another chance he would change course in his life. The reason he chose to go to the Soul Mountain is purely coincidental, he heard the name casually mentioned by a fellow traveler on the train. I read the Chinese version of the book first and loved it.

Between the earlier life and the recent past there is a gap where Soul Mountain might fit. Gao skirts at the edges of them, frustrating our expectations.

I mountxin have never read anything like it, and I found some of the observations and insights to be thrilling. The central theme of the book is straightforward. The story goes on. It is gorgeously told, beautiful in its elegant simplicity, and makes for fascinating food for thought, but ultimatey it is a collection of thoughts that could only really make sense that the man himself.

Now transpose the setting and cultural background to China, and replace the pop culture references with fragments of folklore, Taoist belief, tribal ritual, and memories of the Cultural Revolution.

When the This book is long, incomprehensible, and downright annoying for me. One Man's Bible belongs to xingjiab sad class of books sold on the strength of their authors having won a prize.
Perhaps if I was more familiar with the history of China and the culture I may have enjoyed the book. Later in "You"'s story, "She" departs  "as if in a story, as if in a dream". As a mouhtain, I knew that Xingjian had dealt with being misdiagnosed with terminal cancer and gone soul xinjian through provincial China before publishing this work for which he was exiled from China and for which the Chinese government banned the Nobel Prize in Literature.

This is much more obvious and pronounced in this book, however, as Gao Xingjian experiments with his use of pronouns. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the author took refuge in France, was living in an inner city project housing at the time he got the Nobel Prize. There were interesting parts in the book, yes, but they all seemed to be used solely as backdrops to his endless self-adoration.
That's the entire plot right there. If you even think about reading it I would sugest that you read chapter 74, a short little chapter. The characters' sense of humanity is revealed during their quest. This is barely a book. He meets xingjiwn naked abandoned toddler and tries to rescue him.
